A Modest Proposal, by Jerry Wilson
This empire of ours has to be the dumbest in human history. Why would we have a half-million soldiers occupying three quarters of the world’s countries with over 800 bases if we aren’t extracting any booty? What’s the point? Free trade, we’re told, but it’s a false argument; all the other countries in the world trade without the implied threat of murder and mayhem.
What a ridiculous situation we voters have created. We’ve bought protection we didn’t need and couldn’t afford. Are we so afraid of foreign devils we’ll bankrupt ourselves? Apparently so, we have a $51 trillion debt we can’t pay! So now what to do? Printing more money will just create hyperinflation. Raising taxes won’t do, tax rates of 100% won’t cover this debt. We have only one choice left to prevent America from becoming another hyper-inflated Weimar Germany – acknowledge our bankruptcy and begin anew with a clean slate – and a new currency.
Our military has an 80% approval rating, the same as the DISAPPROVAL rating of our government. Do we really want THIS corrupt government-for-sale dictating military policy? I don’t trust generals but I trust politicians even less. It’s a choice, as always, of the lesser evil. Since we trust the military so much and the government so little we should dismiss the government, and the debt, and let the military rule without them.
I was raised on military bases, went to military college and served as a soldier. I know how good life is in that society where everyone’s muscle and genius is utilized towards the best outcome, where everyone works for thirty years then retires with full pay and benefits, where everyone’s material and societal needs are met, where every member counts and where everyone has equal freedom to advance, not on the corrupt buddy system but by merit and virtue.
Every aspect of society worth keeping can be found in our military. Our military is the most democratic institution in society, the first to integrate, the first to allow women equality. It has laws, police, firemen, courts and schools – practical schools, unlike pubic education – that teach real and useful things. It has construction battalions, engineers, doctors and pharmacies, research scientists and recreational facilities. It is a complete, self-contained society and it’s run on the honor system, something glaringly missing in our government.
So what would life be like without Banksters and the IRS, without insurance companies and ambulance chasers, without unemployment and misemployment, without corrupt unions and politicians? Much better, no doubt. Of course this brings up the question of who pays. That’s easy and requires no taxes to accomplish. It’s called MPC, Military Payment Currency (any wampum would suffice). It is simple enough to establish an equivalent military rank and pay scale to civilians; work difficulty, education, skills and past accomplishments provide the index. Military training would be universal, as it should be in a citizen army.
I do not mean there should be no private sector or opportunity to create individual wealth, that can be done while still remaining part of a united home guard, could in fact be done better. This “capitalist” economy only works well for a tiny minority, who end up with almost everything, but all have to eat, all need shelter and honest work, all are members of the tribe so deserve their inheritance – and their self-respect. European nations provide incomes for mothers. Millions of families were pulled from abject poverty when our military paid a decent stipend for every child in need during WWII. For many, including many of my relatives, it was the first time in their lives they didn’t go to bed hungry, the first time in their lives they didn’t show up at school in rags.
As one of the 20% who disapprove of our military, my objection is not with the organization or the soldiers but with they way they are misused and abused under this government’s control – as muscle for corporate privateers. Led by the Corps of Engineers, our industrial army would not be occupying foreign lands but developing our own sustainable economy right here. Everyone would have a decent and respectable job and our real national defense would be greatly strengthened as we disengage from foreign entanglements, exactly as the father of our country General Washington envisioned.
Our present government is bankrupt, morally and financially, beyond repair. We can only pray our cavalry comes to the rescue. This is not how I thought my campaign for governor would turn. Endorsing a military takeover was the last thing I would have imagined but having considered every other option it’s the only workable solution I can see to prevent chaos and anarchy, to remain a nation united. Of course, the states could go their own way but I don’t think most would find that option acceptable. Since that’s the case, whom would you rather trust with the fate of the nation, this failed government or our military? It’s a simple choice. It’s time to get off the beaten path and blaze a new trail.
Note. Germany’s hyperinflation was stopped with the issuance of a new currency.
