Public employee unions take notice…

Posted on Friday, January 8, 2010 in Issues, Political campaign

If elected I will disband public employee unions in Oregon by Executive Order. You exempt yourselves from legal accountability. You systematically loot the public treasury with your gold-plated salaries, perks, pensions and “pay to play” fees. You bribe the legislature to jeopardize the finances of both the state and local governments, not to mention the finances of your employer, the taxpayers. If not constrained you will ruin us as assuredly as the United Auto Workers ruined American auto companies.

I will tie your pay scales and benefits to match the private sector, about a 34% reduction in pay and a 70% reduction in benefits. You will be treated like taxpayers in every way.  You can get promoted, demoted, hired and fired on merit, just like everyone else.

You’re joking, right? A 34% pay reduction for teachers, police, and firemen? That’ll go over well. Remember, these people didn’t get proportional raises during the economic boom of the 90s (meaning pay increases equal to GDP growth). To punish them now shows nothing but ignorance.

I confess to ignorance on most of the world’s matters but not this one. I’ve been a key democratic party financier and activist since 1986. I know what’s going on. Here’s a little background on the subject, from Alexis deTocqueville’s Democracy in America, titled The Trade of Place Hunting in Certain Democratic Societies. Very enlightening. While you’re at it, study the whole book. Link is on the right. Simple fairness dictates parity with private employments.

2 thumbs up on this one. State government unions are not unions and most state employees are in fear of their unions as much as they are in fear of management. Taxpayer money as well as creating government banking systems within the government to pull money out of employees paychecks is just wrong. Let them unionize how it is done in Europe. State unions don’t represent rank and file, much shenanigans going on here that the general public doesn’t see.

What right do you have to say group of citizens cant band together to form a union? Is it in Oregon’s constitution?

    Just curious..

  5. Jerry says:

Justin, We each have the First Amendment right to speak freely. Here’s a link to the Oregon constitution: http://www.leg.state.or.us/orcons/orcons.html
    Enjoy!
