Why Johnnie Won’t Read
One third of high school graduates never read a book after graduation. Forty-two percent of COLLEGE GRADUATES never read a book after graduation! This is the outcome from an education system that consumes $10,000 per year per student of taxpayer money. Kitzhaber, Bradbury and the other candidates continue to foster the illusion that MORE money spent on education would solve our problems.
You must read this, then tell me more money spent on a Prussian military school system like ours will ever improve anything: http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/hp/frames.htm
If we want to improve education we need only copy the system that produces the highest per capita income in the world, Switzerland’s. And while we’re in a copying mode, let’s adopt Holland’s healthcare system, also the best in the world. And if we want to get our budget under control we can copy Costa Rica and outlaw armies; that alone would cut our workweek in half with no loss of wages! We keep trying to re-invent the wheel when the obvious answers are available on the shelf.
Personally, I’m convinced the only alternative when a government like ours loses all moral authority is to fire them all and start over. It’s either that or bankruptcy, chaos and anarchy. We’ve reached that point. Of course, since most will never read this blog I may as well be talking to a fencepost. Nevertheless, one must do what one can.

could not agree with you more. throwing more money at education is not how to fix a broken school system, and that’s been proven many times elsewhere.
as for health care, we really need it so people like my self should not have to go into bankruptcy because of medical.
My biggest bitch about the proposed health care is the fines that you face if you don’t join.
I mean I just don’t get them in DC. if I don’t have any money for health care now, how in the world can I afford the fines for not having it?
don’t reinvent the wheel on health care.. look around you and use what works and don’t use what does not work.
I love John Taylor Gatto. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read his stuff. He is exactly right. The so called education system prepares the masses to become mindless obedient employees and soldiers used to boredom in service to living in a system that makes no sense. It is mass indoctrination and dumbing down of the population.
Just one of the many things in our world in its current state that makes no sense.
I love John Taylor Gatto, too. I read his book at the right exact time and helped my to-be six year old grandson who was in mortal pain from trying to read those horrible “Bob” books the school system was using. He went from pain to joy; and began loving to read. We’d go to the library and both he and his brother didn’t want to check out the “children’s” book, but went for the older books. Kids want to be a part of the real world not a made up confined space. Then we could go on about the “textbook” corporation strangle hold on the country. His younger brother who is more vocal, assertive and rebellious did not want to go into the first grade at all after his kindergarten experience; and didn’t want to learn to read. I had to motivate him so I said, “Do you know why you want to learn how to read?” He looked at me. “So you can read stuff that adults don’t want you to read.” You could see his little rebellious mind light up; and he got busy learning how to read.
I see your blog catching on in a big way.
